But not all of these products live up to the advertising claims that they can help people lose weight, combat disease, and improve their cognitive abilities. The Federal Trade Commission combats this type of deceptive advertising in coordination with the Food and Drug Administration. The Federal Trade Commission regulates the advertising of weight loss products and programs, including dietary supplements for weight loss under Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act. The FTC has filed more than 150 cases against such products and programs since 1927, and 75 of these have been filed since 1990. Advertising and Marketing. Health Claims.
